German Potato Bratwurst Flatbread

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can (15 oz) READ German Potato Salad, drained
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 Bratwurst links, sliced crosswise into ⅛ inch thick slices.
  • 1 pre-made flatbread, approximately 12-inch diameter
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • Fresh chives, chopped, for garnish
  • Olive oil for drizzle/brushing
  • Fresh lemon wedges, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Makes 4-6 servings

  1. Preheat one side of the flat top grill to medium-high heat, leaving the other side unheated for warming/toasting purposes.
  2. Melt butter over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, move to the warming side.
  3. Grill Bratwurst until browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes.
  4. Spread German potato salad on the flat top grill and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Move to the warming side of your griddle.
  5. Brush the bottom side of the flatbread with olive oil then place on flat top grill.. Spread browned potato salad on top, then add sausages, caramelized onions, and shredded Gruyere cheese.
  6. Slice the flatbread, garnish with chopped chives, and serve with fresh lemon wedges.

DIRECTIONS FOR COOKING ON THE OVEN/STOVE

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F with a baking sheet inside.
  2. In a 12 “skillet or pan, Caramelize onions in butter over medium heat for 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
  3. In the same pan, cook sliced Bratwurst until browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Set aside.
  4. In the same pan, spread drained German potato salad in the skillet. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
  5. Brush the bottom side of the flatbread with olive oil.
  6. Place the flatbread on a baking sheet. Layer with browned potato salad, cooked Bratwurst slices, caramelized onions, and shredded Gruyere cheese.
  7. Place the assembled flatbread in the preheated oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the flatbread is heated through.
  8. Garnish with chopped chives and serve with fresh lemon wedges on the side.

DIRECTIONS FOR COOKING ON A GRILL

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (about 425°F).
  2. In a 12″ skillet or pan, caramelize onions in butter over direct heat for 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
  3. In the same pan, cook sliced Bratwurst until browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Set aside.
  4. In the same pan, spread drained German potato salad. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
  5. Brush the bottom side of the flatbread with olive oil.
  6. Place the flatbread directly on the preheated grill. Layer with browned potato salad, cooked Bratwurst slices, caramelized onions, and shredded Gruyere cheese.
  7. Close the grill lid and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the flatbread is heated through.
  8. Garnish with chopped chives and serve with fresh lemon wedges on the side.
